Fred Phelps to Visit Tulsa

Grand Wizard of the nutjobs, Fred Phelps - you know the Kansas lunatic that protested Matthew Shepard's funeral and, most recently, the funerals of US servicemembers killed in Iraq - will bring his band of loonies down for a protest at the South Tulsa Baptist Church on Sunday. This is the church of former pastor Reverend Lonnie Latham - you know the one arrested for propositioning a male police officer in OKC. Phelps says he is protesting "the hypocritical, fag-invested Southern Baptist Convention." He doesn't know the half of it...

TOHR is mounting a response to the hatemonger's visit. Details in comments.

UPDATE: For some reason, Phelps abandoned his Tulsa protest. Perhaps he needed more time to prepare for his planned demonstration at Coretta Scott King’s funeral on Tuesday.
I'm with Queerty: "...we do hope he goes through with his plans. Why? Because it’ll be sooooo nice to see the man get his ass kicked by an angry mob on national television. "

SWEEPING AWAY the HATE
GLBT & Allied Community Urged to Sweep Away Hate

Dear Friends;
It has come to our attention that Fred Phelps will be leading protests at South Tulsa Baptist Church on the morning of Sunday, February 5th. Phelps is framing this demonstration as an assault on "the hypocritical, fag-invested Southern Baptist Convention." See the full press release at http://www.go dhatesfags.com/fliers/jan2006/20060105 south-tulsa- baptist.pdf

However you may feel about Reverend Lonnie Latham, it should trouble you greatly that he has been arrested for allegedly asking someone to have consensual sex with him. His arrest is in direct contradiction of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Lawrence v. Texas (2003) striking down sodomy laws nationwide. Accordingly, what happened to Rev. Latham could happen to each and every one of us. This is therefore a priceless opportunity for the Tulsa Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender (GLBT) community and its allies to stand up for legal equality, compassion and tolerance.

Please join us for a counter-protest where will we will "sweep away" the hate Phelps and his associates are spreading across the U.S. We will gather on the grassy area across the street from South Tulsa Baptist Church at 1:00 PM. In order to comply with local laws, be sure to stay off the church’s sidewalk and property.

This is to be a silent, non-violent, non- confrontational protest. Don't forget to bring a broom.

Directions can be found at http://www.southtulsabaptist.org/About/Directions.as p

Parking is available at the shopping center located at the intersection of 101st St. and Sheridan. It is an easy walk to the demonstration area.

Peace,

Laura A. Belmonte
